If you are stressed, in pain, unhappy, feeling out of balance, etc., something is calling you, needing your attention. Answer your call….

Lack energy, tired all of the time, and/or not sleeping well?  Something is calling you.

If you repeatedly have thoughts such as “I’d really like to _____, but not now.  Maybe someday.  I don’t have the time, talent, skills, money anyway.  It is just a pipedream.  I don’t deserve it, couldn’t do it, and am too old.”  Something is calling you.

Answering the Call

If you know me or have been following me, you know that years ago I had my own challenges with physical symptoms that didn’t fit traditional diagnoses, and didn’t respond to conventional medical approaches.  Though not yet debilitating, my symptoms weren’t improving, and disability seemed a very real possibility in my youthful future.

At one point, I consulted with a massage therapist.  She asked if I had examined the emotional aspects of my life/situation.  I told her, “I am happy.  There is no issue there”.  I didn’t make an appointment with her.

And, I was happy.  In many ways. I loved my husband, my home, my family, my friends, my job, my life.  I did. (I still do, but even more so now….)

But, in a seemingly small way, I was not satisfied.  I was beginning to feel more uncomfortable with my work environment.  I persevered. I was challenging myself to grow in many ways through being there, which I valued, made me who I am, and do not regret.

So, I focused on the job in a way that resonated with me – one of helping people.  But I didn’t realize that none of this was really enough. Nor did I realize the huge importance of those whispers I was ignoring….

It Was Time for A Change.  Time to Answer My Call.

My Soul was guiding me toward that change.  It whispered the desire for something more meaningful in my life.  I ignored the whispers, as if they were frivolous, and not to be taken seriously.

 

Whispers - Answer Your CallThose whispers grew louder to get my attention in the exact language I would hear and understand: physical discomforts that became concerning, and more limiting.  I had to listen to them in order to not just feel better, but to BE better as well.  I had to transcend symptomatic relief, and find true, lasting change if I wanted to break the cycle and be free, healthy, and at peace.

Dr. John Upledger has referred to this inner healing wisdom as “your inner physician”.  His book, which I highly recommend, Your Inner Physician and You, was intriguing, enlightening, and pivotal in my understanding and use of these concepts.  (Get it: International Alliance of Health Care Educators,  Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Good Reads, Google Books). (Dr. Upledger developed the method of craniosacral therapy that I first studied, that turned around my health and my life, and which is my first go-to with my clients).

Once I listened to the shouts, addressed them, and got to the root causes, my health improved, my symptoms subsided, and my life improved beyond anything I dreamed.  My relationship to myself, my life, and my health became clearer, and richer.  I became response-able, and peaceful thru anything life throws my way.

I stopped limiting my self to chasing symptoms, and began resolving my challenges at the roots.

How Did I Do It?

I became more respons-Able.

Conventional approaches treat symptoms.  They don’t get to the roots of my issues.  I learned that I was the only one who could truly do that.  I was the only one that had the inside information needed for that to happen.

I was the only one who could change what I was experiencing. I was responsible for my experience.

Others had knowledge, skills and expertise that supported me, yes.  Others could perform tests, evaluations and assessments that helped me quantify my situation.  Others provided craniosacral therapy, massage therapy, love, support, and guidance.

But, how I responded to my situation determined my experience and the direction of it.  And, I was able to respond, wasn’t I?  Therefore, I was respons-ABLE.

Answer Your Call - Have Faith

Change From The Inside Out

Ultimately, the changes needed had to come from within me.  No one else on the outside could truly know what was best for me. I was the only one who knew what the voices in my head were saying.  (Same voice that you have inside you that says, “What in the world does she mean here?” Or, “I know exactly what she means!”). I was the only one who knew exactly how I was feeling.

Only that Inner Wisdom built within me, keeping me safe and alive, healing my wounds, fighting off invasive microbes, replacing cells as they died off, maintaining my metabolism, keeping my heart beating, etc., could truly know what was best for me.  Tapping into it, listening to it, supporting it in supporting me is what got me through. It guided my healing journey every step of the way, and was even more powerful once I learned to partner with it, instead of relying on others to walk that path for me with an outside-in point of view.

Answer Your Call by Changing From the Inside Out

I became more respons-Able, which helped me improve and maintain balance in my life, giving me more energy, better health, increased connection and confidence in my decisions, and JOY.  I was even happier because I came to understand that I had a Purpose, and I was being guided to live it.  It was time not only to answer the call, but to live my Calling.

So How Can You Answer Your Call?

Assess your needs.  This isn’t intended to be a substitute for necessary medical or mental health treatment, and you should always seek such necessary treatment first.  Some people may find that this approach complements such care, and streamlines it.  In some cases this approach alone may suffice.

Answer Your Call. Tune In.

You can’t truly follow your guidance, get to the roots of your challenges, and create the joy, energy, and peace you desire without learning to tune into yourself.  This is the first step.

Tune into your body and ask yourself:

  1. What do I notice in my body?  How does my body feel?  Where do I not feel well?
  2. Do I feel open, closed, tight, loose, heavy, light etc.?
  3. Do I feel balanced and equal from side to side?

This is a skill you can master.  Having regular bodywork with a skilled practitioner helps you become even more aware of your body, and can give you a sense of it you won’t have without touch.  The latter is still true for me after nearly 20 years of weekly bodywork – it is part of how we are built.

It is work, yes.  In my experience, it is work I will trade for nothing because I know that no matter what happens, or doesn’t, my best interest is served. That brings me peace.

Find Your Peace

The Wisdom of Your Mind and Body

Do you know you have one of the greatest gifts from nature within you? Did you know that gift is there to guide you on your journey to lasting change, great health, and well-being?  It is waiting for you to listen, and follow it to the roots of what ails you.

Did you know that gift is the wisdom of your mind and body?

What do I mean about tuning in to the wisdom of  your mind and body?

Without a doubt where I am in my life, my dominant thoughts, fears, feelings, issues, show themselves in my physical health and well-being. I know that my body won’t BE better until whatever is at the root of what ails me is uncovered and resolved. Therefore, I continually check in with myself to note how I am feeling and doing on all levels, spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical. I take the wisdom of those experts and personalize it with a good, deep, honest look at myself and my life.

When my body is out of sorts, of course I triage to “stop the bleeding”, and/or relieve the pain, if needed, before I take my journey to the next level.  As I tell my clients, when you have a freight train parked on you, you don’t really care at that moment how or why you ended up there.  You just want out from under it, right?

Wouldn’t it be better to stop the cycle?

If you don’t look at what got you where you are, and change your course, then how do you know you won’t end up there again? Wouldn’t you rather get to the roots of what ails you and stop it in its tracks?  Perhaps there are pearls of wisdom within that are waiting to enrich your life……

Dig deep.  Be Honest.  Be willing to get at the roots of your problems why, when, and how you are ready so that you don’t repeat those unpleasant patterns.   Don’t most great parents want that for their children? In other words,  be healthy, live well.  Stop living the patterns that hold you back. And, LISTEN to those whispers before they become shouts that hit you up side the head and sideline you.  Or, derail you…..  And, aren’t you the parent for your Inner Child, and all other parts of yourself now?

What is your body trying to tell you?

It pretty much boils down to looking at metaphors.  May I illustrate?

Have you ever had pain or tension in your neck?  If you are like most people, you have at some point, right?

Did you question what you “did” that may have caused, or at least contributed to it?  Maybe you postulated that you slept on it wrong.  Or perhaps you suspected your pillow was the culprit.  Or, maybe you thought you worked on the computer for too long.  Maybe you craned your neck to watch your favorite little performer on stage in the school play.  And, yes, those may have played a part.

But did you ask what was going on in your life at the time?  Did you question what your dominant thoughts and resulting feelings were?  Did you consider that perhaps your pillow, sleep posture, computer use, or “spectatorship” were just the proverbial “straw”?

Let’s look at the naked truth of your anatomy.

Above your neck is your head, which is generally considered to be the area in which your intellect resides.  It is the “thought center”, where the brains behind your operation reside.  Right?

And, below your neck is your heart (among other things, but bear with me here).  Can you relate to your heart as the more “feeling” center?  A part of you that guides your decisions from a more love-based, passion-driven, feeling oriented place?

Do your head and your heart always agree when there is a decision to be made?  Is your heart always in it?  Does your head always yield to your heart’s desires?  Or, is there a tug-of-war going on?

What might it be like to be your neck living in between the two? Is it caught in that debate?  Isn’t your neck the proverbial rope?

And, what if you have been sticking your neck out for others, or struggling to hold your head up high? What takes the brunt of those “efforts”?

Doesn’t pondering those questions take you in a very different direction than simply changing out your bothersome pillow when you get to it – again and again?

Are you listening to the wisdom of your heart, now? Is your head objecting?

Many people tell me they hold their stress in their neck.  Asking the deep, tough questions can reveal much.  But, being TRULY willing to listen to, and honor the answers, is how you resolve those cycles in terms of how you deal with your life.

Bodywork that supports resolving the physical patterns at the root will help more directly with the physical effects of stress.

What does the wisdom of your mind and body say? What opportunities are there for you to approach your life differently so that you not just feel better, but are actually BEING better?

Tuning in helps you get to the roots of what ails you to create lasting change.  It is a first big step toward re-writing those programs in your mind that are holding you where you are.  It also is a huge step toward releasing those patterns as they play out in your body.  Furthermore, the wisdom of your mind and body IS within you – a gift from nature awaiting your attention.

There are various resources and experts on the mind-body connection, each with their own expertise.  They may talk of chakras, energy medicine, your intuition, etc.   I have drawn from several perspectives over the years myself.  Carolyn Myss, Barbara Brennan, Dr. Mona Lisa Schulz, Dr. Christine Page, Anodea Judith, and Louise Hay to name a few.

It is a matter of deciding its important, learning to listen, heightening your awareness, and learning to decode all of the wisdom, signs, and signals along the way.  It is a process, which works for me, and many others just like you.

Your inner wisdom, the wisdom of your mind and body, is aware of what lies in all aspects of your mind, even beyond your conscious awareness.  It can help you to resolve those unresolved emotional issues, and create new patterns of believing, thinking, and BEING.

You have the POWER within you to create your life and health.

You have the wisdom of your mind and body guiding you in doing that.  And, all you have to do is….. Listen.

Mind-Body Continuum

What do I mean “mind-body continuum”?

We often talk of the mind-body connection, as if mind and body are separate, but I have come to think it as a continuum: mind=body. Different aspects of the same……

This is similar to how vapor and ice are different states of water.  As the kinetic energy, i.e., energy of motion, within changes, so does the physical state of the water.   In the right set of circumstances, all states could exist at the “same time, same place”.

I find this “mind-body continuum” model better serves me in understanding how “I work”, in managing my life and health, and in working with my clients.  I suspect it can serve you well, too.

Explaining “Your Mind is Your Body”…. Mind=Body

Let’s assume for argument’s sake here that it is true, as quantum physics now says is proven, that you (like everything) ARE energy (the scientific debates around this kind of do require a degree in rocket science to understand……). Matter = physical substance, i.e., your body.  Matter IS energy. It is simply energy in a very condensed state, which behaves in its own ways.  Like ice is very condensed water vapor and behaves differently than water vapor….  And, the water can contain other substances and components.

Wouldn’t you typically say thoughts are energy, not matter? They have a vibration, a quality that lifts you up, brings you down, or is somewhere between – neutral.

But wouldn’t you also agree that they also fuel creativity, whether it be the next greatest invention, dinner this evening, or peace in the world.  Aren’t the thoughts that created those things still embodied in those things?

When you think of “mind”, don’t you think of “thoughts”?  Your mind is thoughts, memories, etc.

Thoughts with that have a connection to feelings also make you calm, nervous, laugh, or even cry. They fuel responses in your body to make you sit up, run, stand, walk, etc.

Talking, laughing, relaxing, crying are all your body in motion, a state of being.  What if that were the same as water being liquid, snow, or ice based on the conditions, i.e. the “thought” at the time….?

What if it is thought, a function of “mind”, that is creating your body?  All of your body as you know it…… In other words, what if your body still embodies the thoughts that created it.

Suppose some of that “thought” creating you, is higher, bigger, greater than what you think of as “you”, or your conscious mind/Ego/intellect?  Even bigger than your subconscious mind…. What if that bigger, higher, greater “MIND” is what is meant by the term “superconscious”?

I am using these terms simply to represent an idea, a neutral conceptual framework for contemplation. It is not intended to have any affiliation with any spiritual or religious beliefs, and is intended to neither support nor negate any such beliefs.   These are paradigms that we are contemplating, exploring, researching, each in our own way.  The term “superconscious” can be substituted with the term for your higher power, for example.

What if you, and Life as you know it, are simply a beautiful, complex, awesome THOUGHT based in the superconscious MIND?

Why Do I Share the “Mind-Body Continuum” With You?

Why do I continue living my deep desire to inspire you to think out of the box, and open your heart to new possibilities?

For one thing, this IS what finally changed my life and health for the better when:

  • a traditional medical model alone did not help
  • that medical model not only didn’t feel like the “right fit”, it actually could have made me worse
  • that medical model disempowered me
  • I had no idea that it was time for a change in my life, until I listened to the now louder whispers of my non-conscious mind
  • I discovered “I” indeed had way more to do with what was happening than I realized
  • I realized how the past was still actually “my present” in unresolved patterns and emotional responses
  • I feared my condition would continue to worsen, and I may become disabled
  • I knew my life would lack meaning if I didn’t have the opportunity to bring the same awesome, life-changing awareness and opportunities to others

Another reason I persist?  I have already done the work, the learning curve, the trial and error, and I can save others from tripping over themselves, wasting valuable time and money trying to find their solutions. Not only can I help them find relief from their symptoms,  I can help them get to the roots of their problems so they have TRUE lasting change.

The information out there is vast, and it can be challenging to digest it all.  I can help you cut to the chase, take control of your life and health, get to the roots of your issues, dig for those pearls of wisdom in your stress and pain, and live your second chapter on your terms.  You CAN live your healthiest, best life yet.

Our beliefs influence our perceptions.  They can be limiting, or open us to new possibilities.  And, they tend to find evidence to reinforce themselves, unless we are willing to open ourselves to new ideas when the old ones aren’t working.  If you are stressed, your old ideas aren’t working…..

Unresolved Emotional Issues Can Cause Health Problems

unresolved emotional issuesDid you know that unresolved emotional issues can cause health problems? And, did you know that your beliefs play a part in those unresolved issues?

When you experience anything, you have thoughts about your experience or situation, whether or not you are aware of them.  Your thoughts are filtered through your beliefs to determine the degree to which you are safe (vs. threatened).  That degree of perceived safety creates feelings, such as fear, terror, rage, anger, happiness, joy, bliss, gratitude, awe, etc.

The greater the perceived threat, the greater the (negative) stress response – fight, flee, freeze – to survive the “danger”. Your system’s default is to help you survive.

Your body’s stress response is intended to escape/survive a short term threat, then return to thriving.  The stress response tends to support inflammation, and is not healthy when it becomes chronic, or your “norm”.

Your physiological responses to stress are the same no matter what causes them.   They are primitive responses that were intended to escape the proverbial tiger.

tiger chasing youAre you being chased by tigers regularly?  Probably not real ones.  But, your body doesn’t know the difference.  Running late for your day, trying to be 6 places at once, getting a speeding ticket, having a bad hair day, forgetting to pick up the dry cleaning for tomorrow, multi-tasking while the dog gives you “sad eyes”, worrying about retirement, and hating work, are all stressful. They ARE your modern-day tigers.  And, your physiological response is still the same, varying by degree depending on how significant (i.e., threatening) your stressor is to you.

You process thoughts all the time about your situation, whether or not you are aware of them.  Those thoughts trigger feelings, which trigger emotional physiological responses.

Unresolved emotional issues exist, in part, because of your beliefs about your situation at the time, and your resulting ability to process the situation.  They are a stress response that becomes your “norm” when you are not able to resolve them.

BACK TO MY LAST ARTICLE, AND THOSE EMOTIONS BUILDING BENEATH THE SURFACE…

What happens when you experience something that leaves an emotional mark?  Your belief about what is happening triggers a response in you, remember?  Perhaps you are simply too young to process what happened in an emotionally mature, resourced way.  Perhaps the situation was traumatic or overwhelming, and at the time your physical survival was on the line, channeling your resources to simply staying alive.  To survive, you coped, compensated, and moved on, losing sight of the emotional aspect of the event.  Or, maybe you were just human, very sensitive, and are still “hanging on to it”, whatever it was…..

That energy of the unresolved feeling, that patterned response, is still within you to some degree.  It is like fireworks going off continually within a bag.  Bumping, wearing, tearing, burning, hurting.  Inflaming.  Setting the stage for dis-ease.

And, every unresolved similar experience you have had since layers upon that, and adds to it.  More fireworks in the bag.

unresolved emotional issues create energy cystsWhen those fireworks are focused in a particular area of the body, craniosacral therapists call it an “energy cyst”.  It also may manifest as a tension pattern in the fascia, muscles, and organs, especially if there was a physical injury at the time of the event. It is like a dent in your car.

It actually can disrupt the fluidity, movement, and function of the tissues, glands, and organs involved.   It interferes the flow of fluids.  The disruption from the unresolved emotional issue and tension creates dysfunction, chronic pain, and limited range of motion.

Stress adds more layers and further complicates things.

Think back to the last time you had an ache or a pain that bothered you enough to remedy it.  Maybe a stiff neck.  Maybe a sore back.  Remember the list of “causes” you contemplated: “Did I sleep on it wrong?  Do I need a new pillow?  Did I lift or twist wrong?  Did I over-do it on the ski slope, or in the garden?  (Or….. the infamous “its old age catching up to me”..).”

Or, perhaps, it has been a chronic problem since that time you fell off your bike, slipped on the stairs, were in that fender-bender, or had that baby. Maybe it has been with you since you were in the womb……

unresolved emotional issues can create health problemsDid you contemplate the insults, injuries, slips, falls and accidents that have built up over the years and how those unresolved issues may be impacting you?  Your physical injuries may not have completely healed no matter how you handled it emotionally, but they also may not have completely healed BECAUSE of how you handled it emotionally.

Did you ask yourself what stresses you, and what the beliefs are that are causing that stress?

Of the hundreds of clients I have had in the 15 years I have been doing bodywork,  I have never had anyone say to me that the possible cause of their pain or health issues may have been a belief they had.  They may have gone so far as to say it is stress, but they stopped there.  As if that is the norm, and there is nothing to do about it but relax for a while.  AND, then go back to living the same way…. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I used to be the same way.  I didn’t know better then, either.  It is the way we are raised.

It isn’t how I live now.  I always look at my Inner World.  Always.

IF YOU HAVEN’T FIGURED IT OUT BY NOW, STRESS COMES FROM YOUR BELIEFS…..

It isn’t your kids’ fault for asking too much of you.   It is what you believe about saying yes/no.  It isn’t your spouse’s fault because they left their dirty socks on the floor.  It is what you believe about the dirty socks being left.  It is the choices you make, even when you say you “have no choice”.   It is your Inner World……  Follow me?  You can control that, but not THEM. Notice, I didn’t say it was easy, though.

If you really want to stop the pain, stress, and health issues, you need to get to the roots of it.  You need to release the unresolved emotional energy.  You need to address the underlying beliefs.  Make sense?

And, by the way, surgery to remove the painful part doesn’t release that energy……  Neither do pain killers.  Can you guess if muscle relaxants do?  Nope.  These are all symptomatic treatment, which may be necessary, but don’t address the roots of the problem.

ON THE FLIP SIDE, RECENT STUDIES SHOW THAT POSITIVE EMOTIONS REDUCE INFLAMMATION.

Inflammation is considered a precursor of disease.  While it is a necessary and natural part of the healing process, you don’t want too much of it.

Negative emotions contribute to inflammation, where as positive ones reduce it.

Do you know what the most positive of all human emotions is?  If you guessed awe, you’d be correct.  It is the most positive based on its association with the lowest levels of Interleukin-6, an inflammatory marker ( http://www.medicaldaily.com/awe-inspiring-moments-lower-inflammation-marker-cytokines-positively-impact-health-328092 ). In other words, it helps reduce inflammation more that the other positive emotions.

As I said in my last article, focusing on positive thoughts doesn’t mean the negative thoughts don’t exist in the background.  It would be the same as saying what is behind you, i.e. out of your line of sight, in this very moment isn’t there.

Spending time thinking and feeling positively is still beneficial to your health.  The question is, how much of that do you need to do to off-set what is going on negatively in the background? Is that realistic and attainable? Do you still want that old tape running beneath the surface?

What obsolete beliefs and unresolved emotional issues can cause you health problems? What lives within your Inner World waiting to be resolved?

You can only handle so much at one time.  You are human, and it is natural to resist change when it requires you to step outside of your comfort zone.  And, it may be way more comfortable being uncomfortable.

You may not be ready to accept dirty socks as the new floor covering.  And, that’s ok.  As long as you are aware of what is going on, and choosing the best you can for yourself at the time.  Or, maybe you are trying let it be “ok”, but you just can’t seem to….yet.  Being aware is different than not having a clue.

It is also possible that whatever lies beneath the surface eludes your conscious memory because it was too painful to recall, or you were too young.  It may have happened before you were born.  That’s ok, too.

You still can release it, and the unresolved emotional issues that go with it, whatever it is.  You can take a step toward better health.

NOW YOU THAT YOU KNOW UNRESOLVED EMOTIONAL ISSUES CAN CAUSE HEALTH PROBLEMS, WHAT DO YOU DO? 

The older you are, the more likely you are to have unresolved emotional issues.  It is a part of life.

You may or may not be aware of them. You may have thought you were “so done with that” and moved on.  You may not have realized how something has impacted you.  You may be aware of those difficult moments, and your challenges dealing with them.

Do you have chronic stress?  Chronic pain?  Health issues?  Anxiety?  Depression?  Difficulty sleeping?  Low energy?  If you answered “yes” to any of these, you may have unresolved emotional issues.

There are many ways to address unresolved emotional issues, each having pros and cons.  You should determine which is best for you and your particular situation.  The important thing is to make an informed decision, and DO something.  The longer you wait, the more layers will be added on, and the more difficult it can be to get to the bottom of them.

A holistic approach encompasses all aspects of the unresolved situation – body, mind, spirit.  Some approaches are not holistic.

I love, and use, craniosacral therapy and transformational coaching, especially when together as a Well-Being Program. They helped me, and others, when nothing else did. They are not intended to substitute for necessary medical or psychological care, but can suffice or complement when you are well resourced.

These holistic approaches get beneath the surface, without using the same mind that created the problem to solve it.  They go deeper to help the energy move out that needs to, releasing those energy cysts, releasing the tissue tension, transforming obsolete patterns into empowering ones. And, because we are working with the energy of the situation, and the non-conscious mind, you don’t need to know, or necessarily recall the details.
