5 Tips for Managing Overwhelm

Overwhelm – 5 Tips For Managing It

When feelings of overwhelm creep into your daily life, do you ignore them and just keep pushing through your day?  If you’re like me, and many of my clients, you do.   But, if we don’t recognize overwhelm as the warning sign it is, we can end up crashing.

Our daily routine and habits give us our comfort zone, and perhaps a false sense of being in control.  They can keep us from realizing that we really DO need to tend to our stress.  And, we can, therefore, miss a rich opportunity for improvement to ultimately impact our health and well-being.

Until…..  a crisis hits, and feelings of overwhelm are an understatement.

The reality check of a crisis can really push us to the limit, as we are drawn into survival mode, with its own set of dynamics.  It forces us to re-examine our priorities.  Unless we value our wellbeing enough to prepare in advance….. without hitting the wall first…..

Our recent snowstorm here in the Northeast was a great opportunity for me to appreciate all I’ve gained in my ability to handle the tough stuff, as well as discover that, well, let’s just say….. I still have a little work to do……

My home can quickly become inaccessible in poor weather.  That’s bad enough, without also considering: a dairy herd, barns, equipment, two homes (father-in-law next door), and a nearly-96 legally blind grandfather living alone 20 minutes away.  Add in: being a one-person business with no paid time off, and no way to recoup lost client time.

My husband and his aging dad run the farm.  I mostly watch, encourage, and empathize, occasionally handling the dumb end of a shovel, or trying to look imposing while running around waving my arms and yelling (usually to chase cows, sometimes to flag down one of the guys … marginally effective at either). But, when there’s a crisis, I’m often called upon to “girl-up”.

Back to the snowfall, and overwhelm.

It seems like everything needs to be done at once in the morning.  Starting stubborn diesel tractors.  Creating access for the milk truck to pick up our milk (luckily – every other day).  Plowing space in the field to spread manure.  Clearing the manure collection area for the wagon and tractor.  Breaking free the frozen barn cleaner.   Clearing the barnyard so the cows can go out so the guys can clean the barn, or exit in an emergency.  Monitoring roof loads.

In the meantime, water bowls must be thawed so the cows can drink (equivalent of a bathtub of water a day), and silos unfrozen and cleared so feed can be put out.  Then, birthing happens…..

Waiting patiently are the houses, roofs, vents and chimneys, driveways, etc.  Not to mention, access to, and fueling of, the outdoor wood furnace. If lucky, we find our vehicles and clear them off.  All while praying we don’t have an emergency or breakdown……

Not done. I still need to check on my grandfather and his home (as well as other family), cancel and re-schedule appointments, hope my office is still accessible and intact, and remember to eat, drink, bathe, sleep, etc……  Get my drift?  Yes, a pun.

Overwhelm? Definitely.

Overwhelm.  Where do I begin dealing?

Better question: where do you begin?

Here are 5 tips I find useful, and share with my clients, for dealing with overwhelm:

  1. Notice how you’re feeling, and tend to your self-care first.  You’re no good to anyone if, well, you’re no good.  Right?
  2. Be present and mindful, “in the moment” to stay focused, clear, and open to what you really need to know.  Listen to your heart, and gut. Then, you’re more likely to notice important changes, and respond appropriately.
  3. Prioritize calmly, objectively, yet intuitively.  Obviously, a crisis necessitates different prioritizing than daily stress management.  Remember, knowing your values is key in setting priorities that keep stress under control, and get you through a crisis. Let your heart and mind partner-up.
  4. Break tasks into smaller steps, focusing on what you’re doing, not on what else is still waiting for you.   Acknowledge your progress and stamina along the way.
  5. Find a silver lining.  Some joy, accomplishment, awareness, experience.  Try to have fun, and appreciate something or someone…..
What overwhelm?

Birdwatching in the sunny, warm window.  Art, skill, both? Or, just adorable?

I find times of overwhelm are excellent opportunities to remember what is REALLY important to me.  It’s a time to bolster my self-care, be in the moment, acknowledge myself for the small things, find pleasure and joy in the simple things, feel connected to something Greater, and be grateful.

One thing that stands out for me, too, in a crisis, is pulling together in community.  Nothing is more heartwarming to me than seeing everyone do and BE their best to help each other and make the world go ’round.  How about you?

An overlooked secret to keeping your New Year's resolutions

An Overlooked Secret to Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

Despite your best intentions and efforts,  do you still fail to keep your New Year’s resolutions?  If you said, “Yes”, you are likely missing an overlooked secret to keeping your New Year’s Resolutions.

You are not alone. Research shows that about 50% of all Americans make resolutions.  Yet, of those, only about 8% are successful in keeping them.

If you are like most resolution-makers, you choose goals related to health and fitness, finances, or improving your of life.  You may want such changes, but still not be successful despite your best intentions.

If you find it difficult to actually keep your resolutions, here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Am I making resolutions based upon my “shoulds” and “musts”?
  • Are my resolutions the same as what everyone else is doing?
  • Have I made this resolution year after year with no real progress?
  • Am I still falling short despite an accountability or buddy system, and breaking my goals into small steps?

If you answered “Yes” to any or all of the above questions, you may be missing the overlooked secret to keeping your New Year’s Resolutions.  You are likely making them from your “head”, i.e. what you “think” you “should” do.

What’s wrong with that? Well, let me ask you this: do you actually feel good about, and enjoy taking the action required?  If not, how likely are you to stick with doing something you don’t like doing, or feel passionate about?

If you don’t feel good about it, you are likely missing the overlooked secret to keeping your New Year’s Resolutions.

What IS that overlooked secret to keeping your New Year’s Resolutions?

secret to keeping your resolutionsHere it is: Following your heart.

If your heart isn’t in the game, you lack the passion, drive, and desire that provide lasting momentum and energy needed to keep you going.  Your motivations come from other sources that don’t last, like willpower.

You are created of something greater than your personality self, designed to be and live a certain way YOU-nique to you.  Your heart knows what that is, and shows you your path in the form of love, joy and passion.

Positive loving, joyful emotions are life-sustaining Source energy flowing freely, and abundantly within and through you.  When you TRULY love what you are doing, it is a sign that you are on your path to living fully aligned with your Purpose.

Align with your Purpose. Follow your Soul Intentions.

secret to keeping your New Year's ResolutionsYour Soul Intentions for this lifetime are your Purpose.  Your heart knows what your Purpose is, and is guiding you with its love, joy, and passion.

You come into this life designed perfectly to live YOUR Purpose.  When you set goals aligned with your Purpose, you will find you enjoy accomplishing them and that you have the resources needed to do so.

That doesn’t mean it is always easy because there will likely be some tests to support your growth along the way.  But, you will feel less like a square peg in a round hole, and feel less stressed as a result.  You will love your life, and feel like your heart is in living it.

The overlooked secret to keeping your New Year’s Resolutions IS following your heart, thus aligning with your Purpose, i.e. your Soul Intentions for this lifetime.

Don’t make resolutions.

That’s right. Don’t pledge to do those cliché things that you always SAY you should/must do, but your heart isn’t in.   Isn’t it easier to “do it if your heart is in it”?

You are built and resourced to live your Soul Intentions, and when you attune yourself to, and align yourself with those, you will find you have better results. Set goals aligned with your Soul Intentions instead of making cliché resolutions you think you should.

The common tips and tricks to keeping your resolutions still have value.

Most people benefit from breaking goals down into doable, practical steps.  It also helps to celebrate reaching each of those mini milestones.

It can also be helpful to have support in community with others who have similar goals.  You can lean on each other and hold each other accountable.  You also can benefit from suggestions others find helpful.

Another very useful tip is to focus on the feeling of having accomplished your goal.  The feeling is actually the motivator behind it all.  The path you take to get there can vary, and the end result may end up being different than the goal you set.  What matters is the feeling you have at the end showing you whether you ARE on your path, or not.

Choosing the optimal time for changes can also help you succeed in creating them.

The urge to start fresh, commit to change, and begin anew is natural at this time of year.

secret to keeping your New Year's resolutionsIt is related to the cycles of light, and dark, and forces greater than you (remember the Rich Spiritual Symbolism in the Holiday Stories ?).  It is an optimal time for aligning with your YOU-niqe path, choosing the changes you will make, and setting your plan in motion.

Above all, have fun and be gentle with yourself in creating your plan for 2017.  Tune in to, and honor your heart.  See what you notice and enjoy the journey.

How do I align with my Soul Intentions?

Meditation and Imagery can help you align with your soul intentionsI meditate, and use guided imagery to listen to my Inner Wisdom, i.e., my Higher Self communicating my Soul’s path to me.

Spiritual Symbolism in the Holiday Stories

There Is Rich Spiritual Symbolism in the Holiday Stories

Spiritual Symbolism in the Holiday StoriesThere is rich spiritual symbolism in the holiday stories.

Taking your cue from the spiritual symbolism in the holiday stories, and aligning with the seasonal cycles of nature, can enrich your own journey through spiritual growth to self-actualization. Each of the holiday stories in their own way, and the cycling of the seasons, symbolize the same process: your spiritual growth through illumination of your soul and its growth in consciousness.

The holy days and the winter solstice embody significant stages in our personal and spiritual growth. This is the season of rest, i.e. hibernation, in preparation for renewed life to begin its next phase in Spring.

You likely feel instinctively inclined to connect with your Soul intentions for the coming year at this time.

Many people manifest this inclination by making “resolutions”.

Yet, your Soul intentions are deeper and more meaningful than traditional resolutions.  Your Soul intentions are related to your Purpose, which is connected to your soul’s growth, and is what those inclinations to make resolutions are REALLY about.

Looking deeper at the spiritual symbolism in the holiday stories….

To manifest, i.e. birth,  your Soul intentions, there must parents.  The father figure is the mind, the spirit, the masculine principle.  The mother is the heart, the soul, the feminine receptive principle.

In part, the holiday stories symbolize preparing and purifying yourself by transcending your Human Ego, harmonizing your mind and your heart. In other words, opening to your pure heart and mind working together to manifest your Highest intentions.  Opening in this way, you are birthing the Light within you into your earthly self and existence.

You are birthing your Soul intentions – YOUR Purpose.

Spiritual symbolism in the holiday stories - your inner lightWhen the heart and soul are pure, then the “Child” is born not of the mind, but of the Universal Soul, or the Holy Spirit.  It occurs in the form of Divine Love, entering the human heart and soul. (You know that feeling, don’t you?  The one where you feel deeply inspired, awed, connected, and at peace)?

As Divine Love fills your heart, your Inner Light shines brighter, and your connection to your Purpose is stronger.  You are manifesting your Soul intentions.

As you enter this time of rest and preparation for renewal, reflect upon what you have manifested thus far, and the infinite possibilities awaiting manifestation.

The shortening of days represents the veil of forgetfulness about why you came here and what your purpose is.  As the daylight again increases, your Soul is released into the light, making its way back to Source.

Thus, you have a rich opportunity now to re-connect with your purpose for this lifetime, and set your intentions for the coming year.

Which seeds will you “resolve” to plant?

As you connect with your Source, and open to your Soul’s intentions for this lifetime, do so without reservation or judgement.

Recall the importance of your mind and intellect supporting and protecting that Soul connection through your heart as needed, unconditionally.  Invite your human mind to accept that there is more to your Being than it alone can create, or even understand.

It is a rich time for feeling and experiencing “awe”, which is the most relaxing, stress reducing human emotion. “Awe” is associated also with experiencing unconditional love in the deepest, most profound sense.

Letting your Light shine – more spiritual symbolism of the holiday stories.

Spiritual symbolism in the holiday storiesWhen you are too busy eating, drinking, amusing yourself in the human materialistic sense, there is “no room at the inn” for the one who has received the Divine within.  In other words, your connection to Source isn’t as open, strong, and clear.  Your higher self is not as “welcome”.

When shifting to a “poverty of material conditions” (a.k.a. “the manger”), the connection is made clear, and this inner divine Light is projected from you.  Others can see it from afar, and will be drawn in.

Your Inner Light is there to support, nourish, comfort, heal, and revitalize you on your journey.  It is always within you, and available to you lighting your way.

How will you let your inner light shine more brightly?  What will you bring forth in the new year to bring your Purpose to Life?

I invite you to spend this holy time of solstice reflecting upon your own journey, and opening your pure heart to the possibilities within.

What infinite potential lies within your pure heart, your Soul’s intentions to be birthed in this lifetime?  How can your mind best support this process without your Ego’s judgement interfering?  How will your masculine and feminine aspects harmonize to birth your Purpose?

I find this a very deep, interesting, and complex topic to ponder.  I do not pretend to be an expert in it at all.  What I do profess to be an expert it, is doing my personal best to live my own version of that.  No one else can do it for me.

You are an expert in living your own journey.

Only you could have gotten to exactly where you are, the way you did.  The path you are following is You-nique yours to follow.

You are exactly where you are meant to be, how you are meant to be at all times.

You meant to experience not only the joy, but also the feelings of fear, doubt, and judgement around yourself and your journey.

Spiritual symbolism in the holiday stories - guiding you(I bet you even objected in your own way, if only a little, to the idea of being “an expert in your own journey”, didn’t you?).

Those difficult feelings are your friends and guides.  They are showing you the opportunities for your next steps in your personal growth: to dissolve those fears, doubts, judgements and further purify yourself.  They are showing you where you are blocked from more fully BEING YOU.

The purification process opens you to receive even more clearly from Source, and let your inner light shine even brighter.  In terms of the spiritual symbolism of the holiday stories, it is purifying your heart so that you can experience spiritual birth, and hence renewal.   In so doing, you move closer to living in alignment with your Soul intentions.  Intentionally.

Thank you for BEING You.  In BEING YOU, you fulfill your Purpose, filling your space in the WHOLE.

In the spirit of the spiritual symbolism in the holiday stories, I invite you to devote some quiet, quality time to going within. Connect with stillness, and allow yourself to listen to your own Inner Wisdom. It is guiding you to your next steps with energy, joy, and peace.

During this sacred open time, let your Inner Wisdom help you determine your Soul intentions for 2017, and resolve to align with those to the best of your ability.

The world needs you now more than ever to bring your Purpose to Life, and Life to your Purpose.

Intuition - Your Key to Health and Well-Being

Intuition – Your Mind-Body Key to Health and Well-Being

What if you had intuition?

And, what if intuition could improve your health and well-being?  How might your life be different if that were true?

Like many people, I used to think that intuition was reserved for “the gifted”, and produced insight into the future or situations in a mystical way.  Does that resonate with your belief, too?

Though I had a gut feeling that was “true” at times, I always considered it to be a fluke, or a fleeting moment that may or may never happen again.  I never used to think of myself as intuitive.  Sound familiar?

And, I certainly never thought of it as a capacity I could develop, that could enhance my health and well-being.

But, then I learned I was…. uh….. wrong.  Yep.  W-R-O-N-G.

We ALL have the capacity for intuition.

We all have intuitionThat includes you and me.  Yes, ALL of us.  The capacity for intuition develops to a greater extent in some people than others, but we all have it.

When we perceive facts directly, independently from any reasoning, and outside the function of our other 5 senses, we are using intuition.  Still sounds like a stretch, though, right?

Intuition is part of the mind-body network that you can learn to tap into,  and develop. It is no different than your other senses and functions as a transmitter of mind-body messages that you can use to guide your choices and actions for a happier, healthier life.

Why is this important?

I have shared information with you in previous posts regarding the mind-body relationship, and how you can use that to your benefit.  That relationship IS part of your innate intuition network, which I call your Inner Wisdom.

Your experiences, and the emotions relating to them, get encoded in not only your brain, but your tissues and organs as well.  Your memory of those experiences is thus, not only “brain memory”, but “tissue memory”.

Because of that “memory”, those experiences can continue to influence your life, health, and reality.  Not only do they influence your conscious mind, they communicate messages to you through “symptoms” of physical disorders and disease.  The trick is in learning to LISTEN and respond differently, in order to create a new outcome, i.e. a new reality, for yourself.

NOTE: Please remember none of this is intended to substitute for necessary medical care.

So, how do you connect with your intuition?

You have to screen out interference and be aware to connect with your intuitionYou have to increase self-awareness, and learn to screen out the “interference”.  It comes with practice.

Practices that support reaching a deep, quiet, relaxed state naturally support developing your capacity for intuition.  These practices help you discern what really “matters”, and what is non-serving, distracting “chatter”.

When my messages, a.k.a. “symptoms”,  grew loud enough that I couldn’t ignore them, I sought out craniosacral therapy.  At the time, I had NO clue that there was anything for me to “hear”.

How does craniosacral therapy help?

By receiving craniosacral therapy regularly, I began to:

  • relax in new, deeper ways;
  • let go of the messages and patterns that were no longer serving me; and
  • open to what I REALLY needed to know.

My system released all of the distracting, non-serving noise making that deeper, clearer listening easier.

As I began to listen, I learned to respond in a way that improved my health when nothing else did.  My life grew richer when I didn’t know I even wanted that.

I had a greater connection to my life, and to the choices that were best for me.  I experienced a deeper “knowing” that transcended reason and aligned with a Higher plan. And, through that knowing, I instinctively aligned with, and cultivated, the changes in my life that were an inherent part of this rewarding outcome.

What support is there for this concept?

Intuition = body + mind + spiritOne HUGE key in my process was the work of medical intuitive, neuropsychiatrist, and neuroscientist Dr. Mona Lisa Schulz, M.D., PhD.  Her book  Awakening Intuition: Using Your Mind-Body Network for Insight and Healing (read an excerpt), helped me understand what was happening with me in ways nothing else had.  It confirmed what my intuition was telling me, supporting me in taking my process to the next level. And, it fascinated the daylights out of me, too…..

The work of Carolyn Myss, Christine Page, Barbara Brennan, Anodea Judith, and many others also provided the support and confirmation I needed to understand, embrace, and follow my intuition.

My experience and training during my craniosacral therapy and transformational coaching certification processes deepened my capacity for intuition, too.  This work developed my faith, trust, and relationship with that which is Higher than our Ego selves, which helped me increase my capacity to support not only my own, but the inherent healing journey of others.

How does Transformational Coaching help?

Transformational Coaching transcends the traditional goals and accountability coaching model.  It helps you connect to what is in your heart, and to your own YOU-nique journey to being who you are truly designed to be. Transformational coaching helps you discover what is and is not working for you, filter out the “noise” and “distractions” to hear your TRUTH, so that you can make the best decisions, and take the best actions for YOU.

It adds the benefits of working in a systematic, yet organic way, that keeps you on track and accountable.

Bottom line, what does Intuition do for health and well-being?

Developing your capacity for intuition can reduce stress, and help you discern your best choices for YOU by listening to your Inner Wisdom, i.e. utilizing your mind-body network.  That network IS a part of your design as a human being.

Your body responds to input received and processed in your nervous system.  That includes input from all of your senses, including your gut, your intuition.  And, processing that input, listening to it, can guide you to new awareness, perspectives, beliefs, and choices for more energy, joy, and peace.

All of my work with clients helps them learn to discover the pearls of wisdom, and listen to the messages, in their symptoms, pain and stress to create the energy, joy, and peace they seek.
